Green Tea Ice Cream
Matcha, or powdered green tea, is a Japanese tea that is used in formal tea ceremonies. As well, it is sometimes used to add color or flavor to foods such as noodles or a wide variety of Japanese candies and sweets. The most famous of all of these is green tea ice cream, which is sometimes also called matcha ice cream.
To make matcha, which is sometimes spells “maccha,” special gyokuro tea plants are protected from the sun for several weeks. Then the tea leaves are harvested, steamed, and dried, as well as de-veined, before beign ground to a very fine powder. This is the matcha that is the essential ingredient in green tea ice cream. The green tea powder that comes from the city of Uji in Japan is considered by many to be the highest quality matcha in the world. Nishio, another city also on the island of Honshu, produces more green tea powder than any other city. Tea from Uji is called “Ujicha,” “cha” meaning “tea,” and tea from Nishio is quite logically called “Nishiocha.”
In Japan, almost every ice cream manufacturer makes a green tea ice cream. Even foreign companies like Häagen-Dazs have been making a green tea ice cream for some time. Green tea ice cream has also become a great favorite in the Western world, which is not surprising considering how popular green tea itself is these days. This is probably due not only to its wonderful taste, but to the many scientific studies that have shown green tea to have many health benefits, including helping with proper digestion, fighting infections and illnesses, preventing high blood pressure, and helping with weight loss. Green tea might even have the ability to help prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease.
If you like green tea ice cream, you may also enjoy some other Japanese treats containing matcha powder, such as matcha kakigori, shaved ice flavored with green tea syrup, or Castella (also known as Kasutera), a sponge cake often sold at street festivals in Japan. You can even buy Pocky in a green tea flavor. Many traditional Western sweets are also available with green tea essences added, like chocolates, cookies, or cakes. Green tea ice cream, however, is the one most likely to be easily found, owing to its popularity.
If you’re interested in using green tea for its medicinal benefits, you should drink three to five cups each day, and consume about five grams of the powdered maccha. But if you’re just interested in enjoying the wonderful taste, why not treat yourself to a bowl of green tea ice cream instead?
